The theme of the lesson: Whose Parents Were the Strictest.

The aim of the lesson: by the end of the lesson the Ss of the 8V form will be able to write a paragraph about their parents using the verbs allow, let, make, force in passive.

The objectives: the Ss will have practiced in discussing whose parents were the strictest.

New language: allow, let, make, force in passive.

Materials & equipment: Ss’ handouts, OHT

Lesson Procedure

  1. Warm up.

Look at the photos and say:

What good memories have you got about your childhood?

What bad things can’t you forget?

  1. Ss’ questionnaire.

a) distribute the questionnaires,

b) read through it with them explaining any possible difficulties or giving examples from your own experience.

  1. Discussion.

Put students into groups of about four and ask them to decide whose parents were the strictest. They can use the ideas in the questionnaire, but they may want to add to them. (As they are involved in the discussion go round the groups listening to what they have to say. It is better not to correct students at this stage, but if they are having problems expressing themselves you might want to help out).

During the discussion groups should appoint one student as spokesperson. Their job is to report the findings of the group to the class as a whole after the discussion. You may want to allocate other roles as well. One possibility is to make one student the group secretary. Their job is to take notes.

  1. Post-discussion.

-Spokesperson reports back to the class.

-Ask the other groups to listen carefully and

-compare with the strictest parents from their own group.

-After the discussion summarize what the groups have told you,

-ask the other groups for their comments.

  1. Language Focus

  1. Ask Ss to underline all the expressions about what people were forced to do and what they were allowed to do in different colours.

  2. Take away their copies. Give them handouts with blanks (you may show it on OHT)

  3. Ask them to fill in the blanks.

  4. Put the Ss into 3 groups.

-Ask the advanced to recall the whole sentences and put them down.

-Ask the intermediate group to complete the sentences leaving a few key words.

- give the poor Ss a version of each sentence with all the grammatical words and markers removed.

(after 5 minutes you can ask them to pause while you read the sentences out to them).

  1. Controlled practice.

  1. Complete these to make true sentences:

1. When I was a child my parents made me ….

2. They let me ….

3. I was forced to ….

4. I was allowed to

5. I was supposed to ….

6. I had to

b) Read your sentences to the class. (the teacher writes clues up on the board).

Fatima Wear uniform

Alan Homework

Rita Stay out late

c) Ss will then recall:

Fatima was made to wear her uniform.

Alan was forced to do his homework

Rita was allowed to stay out late.

  1. Follow-Up.

Listen to sample stories and write a paragraph about your parents

A: My Dad is a quiet man really, so he didn't really make me do much at home. He sometimes asked me to wash his car or cut the grass, but I was never forced to do it, and I could usually get some pocket money for it as well. I think my Mum was also pretty easy-going; she let me stay out late with my friends. As long as she knew where I was, she wouldn't mind so much what I did.

B: My father was definitely stricter than my Mum. If I had been in trouble at school, it was always left up to him to tell me off. But I wouldn't say that my Mum was easy-going exactly. She would sit me down sometimes and make me do my homework in front of her, or force me to eat my greens, things like that. I guess I was just more scared of my father.

When you were a child:

    1. Do you think your parents were strict or easy-going?

    2. Did they allow you to stay out late at night?

    3. Did they let you go on holiday on your own?

    4. When you went out did you always have to tell them where you were going?

    5. Did you have to look after brothers or sisters?

    6. Did they let you stay overnight with friends?

    7. Did they force you help about the house?

    8. Did you always have to do your homework before supper?

    9. What time were you to go to bed?

    10. Did you have to help in the garden?
