Great Britain: General Information and Traditions

Материалы, необходимые для игр и конкурсов, подготовленных учителем: мяч, 2 текста, разрезанные на строчки, иллюстрированный текст фонетического стишка на листе ватмана, 2 воздушных шара, призы


Беседа на уроке ведется исключительно на английском языке.


Цели урока:

создать положительную мотивацию к изучению английского языка и радостное настроение на уроке;

ознакомить учеников с общей информацией о Великобритании

закрепить изученный материал по теме «Английские праздники»

научить детей работать в коллективе и видеть результаты коллективной деятельности.

научить детей понимать речь незнакомого человека, используя вербальные и невербальные средства языка

воспитать уважение к культуре и традициям Великобритании.


The Lesson Procedure


1. Warming up


Hallo, dear children. I’m very glad to see you. I’m going to be your teacher today. My name is… First we are going to warm up a little with the ball. I’ll throw you the ball and ask a question. Catch the ball, please, and throw it back to me with your answer.

What is your name?

How are you?

Where do you live?

Where are you from?

How old are you?

Do you like English?

When do you get up?

Do you like to go to school?

What is your favourite colour?

Do you like holidays?


2. Phonetic drill


You know that you should pronounce English sounds correctly. Now we’ll practice the sound

It is something between Russian «э» and «а». Open your mouth wide and say “black, cat, sat, mat, rat” Repeat the rhyme after me:


A black cat

Sat on a mat

And ate a fat rat.


3. General information about Great Britain


So, children, what language are we learning now? And who knows in what countries

people speak English? Let’s look at the screen and learn some information about Great Britain. Then I’m going to ask you questions and you’ll answer them. (Slides 1-6)


Now answer my questions, please:

What is the name of the country we’ve just seen?

What colour is the flag of Great Britain?

How many parts are there in Great Britain?

Who can give the names of the 4 parts?

What is the name of the British Queen?

What is the capital of Great Britain?

What language do they speak in Great Britain?


Now you know quite a lot about Great Britain.


4. Dancing minute


Well, I think you’re tired of sitting - let’s dance a little. Stand up, please, look at me, children, and dance together with me to the music:

5. British Holidays (games and competitions)


By the way, children, what’s the date today? Right, it’s the 30th of October today. And what holiday will British people celebrate tomorrow? That’s right – Halloween. And who knows the main and the most beautiful holiday of a year? Certainly- it’s Christmas. So, now we’re going to speak about the two very popular holidays in Great Britain – Christmas and Halloween. Let’s play interesting games and have exciting competitions.


1) Do you know these words?


I’d like to divide your group into two equal teams as we’re going to have a competition. The first team will be called “Christmas” and the second – “Halloween”. Look at the screen, please. (Slide 8) You can see the words. The words from the column “Christmas” are for Christmas team and the column “Halloween” is for Halloween team. You are going to come up to the blackboard by one in turn and write one of the words from your column in Russian. Your team will win if you write all the words from your column first.


2) Match the holidays with the pictures: (slide 9)


Your next task is to match the pictures with the two holidays.


3) Making up stories.


Every team gets a story cut into lines. (Приложение 2) Your task is to connect the lines in the right order and to make up the story. Then you’ll answer my questions to your stories.


Questions to the story “Halloween”:


1) When do English people celebrate Halloween?

2) What is the symbol of Halloween?

3) How do children make lanterns?

4) What are the symbolic colours of Halloween?

5) Why do children visit houses?

6) What do children do if people don’t treat them?


Question to the story “Christmas”:


1) When is Christmas celebrated in Great Britain?

2) When is it celebrated in Russia?

3) What is the symbol of Christmas?

4) What is the traditional Christmas food?

5) Where do children hang their stockings?

6) Why do they hang their stockings?


6. Drawing competition


Each team will get one balloon. The team “Christmas” will draw Santa Claus on their balloon and the team “Halloween” will draw Jack-o-lantern. You’ll do it in turn. Every member of the teams can draw only one element on the balloon (e.g. a nose or one eye) and then passes the felt pen to another pupil.


(As the lesson is planned for a group of unknown pupils, two more games are given in the Presentation (slides 10, 11) in case there is time left).

I’m sure you all know a very popular English Christmas song “Jingle, bells”. Let’s sing it together.
