Warming up.
What have you come here for?
Do you know the reasons of people’s communication?
Is it an easy thing? What does it depend on?
So, communication is worth discussing as many things influence it. And if you want to be a success in life you should learn to live with others and have as fewer conflicts as possible. At this lesson I suggest you discussing some things, which will help you to master the art of communication.
1. Expressing personal priorities. Phonetic drill + logical grouping
Say the words after me and practice your pronunciation:
Haughty, decent, persistent, witty, boastful, communicative, irritable, hot-tempered, light-minded, cruel, impudent, mean, tactful, reasonable, honest, obstinate
- choose and name what qualities you look for in a good companion;
You may add some words of your own to each category if you want.
Saying compliments or criticizing.
Try to analyze the character of your classmate the way you feel it. What traits does he/she posses?
Use the words: extremely, not at all, a bit, rather, very, quite/fairly, never. Group adjectives with and/but
E.g. You are extremely…but a bit…..; rather……and very ….etc.
3.Evaluating people’s behavior.
Our success in communication depends on the way we behave. Work in pairs, analyze the behavior of these two creatures according to their actions. Work in pairs.
e.g. – He/she (always, sometimes, never, seldom, often) Vs
-- I think he/she
Home task: Do the test and analyze the score. Get ready to discuss it in class. Are you happy being you? There are times when each and every one of us looks in the mirror and wishes that somebody completely different was staring back. But what about the rest of the time? Do our quiz and find out if you’re happy being you!
If somebody criticizes you, do you usually:
feel very sorry for yourself?
listen to what they’re saying before you reply?
start defending yourself?
Back to that mirror. Study your full- length reflection in it and tick which parts of you you’d change if you had half a chance:
nose e) teeth i) legs
mouth f) skin j) height
eyes g) tummy k) chest/bust
ears h) bottom l) feet
If a member of the opposite sex asked you out, would you be:
surprised but pleased and flattered?
hardly surprised? After all, you are the best looking person in the school!
absolutely amazed that they should choose you?
What quality do you look for in a best friend?
A sense of humor?
Someone you can tell your troubles to?
Someone who thinks you are brilliant?
When you are with a group of people, how would you describe yourself?
The leader of the pack?
One of the crowd?
The odd one out?
If you were feeling depressed, would you:
talk to someone about it?
go and take some exercise?
sit around and feel miserable?
What’s your score?
1. a 0 b 5 c 10
2. Score one point for every letter you didn’t tick.
3. a 5 b 10 c 0
4. a 5 b 0 c 10
5. a 10 b 5 c 0
6. a 5 b10 c 0
0-20: Come on, you can’t be that bad … no one is! You have a very low opinion of yourself and, if you don’t change soon, you’ll spend your whole life feeling unhappy and envious of your friends instead of having a laugh and enjoying communicating with them. Take another look in that mirror and smile! You and everything around you will look better immediately!
21-40: You’re realistic about yourself and realize that you can’t be the center of attention the whole time. That makes you a very good friend to have around. Don’t worry about your appearance. Nobody’s perfect!
41-62: You are self- confident and have a high regard for yourself. You also like to be at the center of things and have lots of friends. Be careful about becoming too big- headed though. If you do, you’ll regret it!
