Why study English?

T: Good morning dear boys and girls! Glad to see you. How are you today? How are things with you? etc. Today we are going to have a very interesting topic that deals with our studies, personal interests and even our future plans. So to begin with, I want you to listen to some young people and guess what we are going to speak about.

What is the theme of our lesson? Right you are. It’s “ Why study English? So today we are going not only speak English but we are going speak about it. By the way, What lnges do you speak? What lnges do you speak at home? Do you mix your mother tongue with English when you are speaking. When did you start learning English? Do you like it?” At the end of the lesson you will give a short interview to our local TV company on the issue why I study English. OK? . So, to begin with, let’s name the reasons which the young people have mentioned. what are the main reasons of learning English? ( Travelling, Getting jobs, music and movies, Speaking i. e. conversation) But what other reasons would you add? Reading newspapers and magazines, taking part in different competitions.

If we put all our ideas into a scheme, we shall have the following one ( A scheme on the blackboard) This scheme will be a plan of our lesson.

  1. Phonetics.

I agree with one of the girls that English pronunciation is rather difficult. So, we shall start our lesson with this following aspect. At home you were to prepare

а good phonetic reading of the poem dedicating to English lnge. What is the idea of the poem? How does the author characterizes English?

O, English! You are a joy, delight,

That makes us busy, friendly and bright.

You are a chance to see the world,

That is so beautiful and old.

You are a chance to realize

If man can try to be so wise.

To understand unknown speech

And then exclaim:” It is so rich!”

It’s so great to grasp creation

And master thoughts and inspiration.

It is so great to keep in touch,

With all the world and speak so much.

I know that people mustn’t fight

And English helps them all to unite.

O, English! You’ve become my friend

Whom I should better understand.

2) Translation by two lines.

3) Now listen to the literary translation of the poem

Introduce yourselves, say what country you come from and what your country is famous for. Put on your badges and something that will show which country you are from.

    1. Music. ( Listening) We can learn English through music. Actually, music is a part of our life. We can hear English songs everywhere: in concert halls, shops, on TV, over the radio, in the parks, at homes, in transport and even in the street. Every country in the world has its own special kind of music. Each kind of music is different and tells us about the place it comes from and the people who play and listen to it. Now listen to three types of music and complete the table. Where does the music come from? What is it about? What instruments do musicians play? In the text you’ll hear names of some musical instruments which you may not know.

    banjo- банджо

    harp- арфа

    harmonica- губная гармоника

and at the end of each text you will also hear some famous singers and bands, groups.

    1. Travelling

The most common reason why people learn English is traveling. Before going to this or that country we should know the language of the country and some facts about it. By the way, what English speaking countries do you know? -Why are they called English-speaking countries?

(People speak English in them, English is their mother tongue)

Now we shall work in groups. Each group will go to a distance travelling to one of the countries. Choose one. Discuss in groups and one of the students will make a report according to the chart.
