Ход урока:

  1. Начало урока. Приветствие:

  • Ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to our press-conference. I am extremely pleased to meet you here at our conference. The problem under discussion is Lake Baikal. Let me introduce the participants of our conference:

- Mr. Romanov, the head of the Baikal timber processing plant;

-Mr. Brinks, an American businessman;

-Mrs. Fedosova, an ecologist;

-Mr. Naumov, a public representative;

-Mr. Bryansky, a Russian journalist;

-Mrs. Chenchushvili, a writer;

-Shipitsina Luba, Mashoshina Nadya, pupils of 9th form, school №66

-Mr.Chervinsky, a local resident;

-a couple of Italien tourists, the Berti family.

Let me be a chairperson today. Are you ready to work? Don’t worry, everything will be o.k. I want you to listen to today’s program. First, you’ll answer the questions of the journalist. Second, we will discuss the problems of Lake Baikal and you will try to suggest ways of solving them. Third, a group of girls will prepare their project: Let’s protect Lake Baikal! Let’s start!

  1. Discussion.

We live near Lake Baikal. It is the most beautiful lake in the world, I think. But Lake Baikal has some problems. I want you to look at the list of problems, which you named at our previous lessons. What problems does Lake Baikal have? Can you suggest the ways of solving these problems?

Problems: (на доске)

Water pollution

Littering

Air pollution

acid rains

lack of comfortable campsites

-What do you know about Lake Baikal?

-Mr. Romanov, are you sure that your plant does not harm Lake Baikal?

-Our plant doesn’t harm the nature, and I can prove it. Our enterprise returns “waste” water to the lake quite pure. We use modern filtering techniques. And we spare no expenditures to keep Baikal pure and clean. I can guarantee the safety of our industry.

- Ok, thank you, Mr. Romanov. And now I’d like to ask a question to Mr. Naumov, a public representative. Do you think the lake should be preserved completely as a wonder of nature or we should use it for economic purposes?

-As for me, I’m against building factories and plants because they pollute the air and the water and poison plants and the soil. I’m absolutely sure that we must preserve Baikal as a wonder of nature for the benefit of future generations.

-The next question is for Mr. Brinks. Why do you want to invest money in our region? Why have you chosen Baikal and how will you develop the economy?

-I have no doubt that we must use Lake Baikal for economic purposes, for example, we can build a cellulose plant. I am ready to invest money in this project. I’m sure it will be profitable because raw materials such as great amount of water and taiga are at hand. Besides, we could provide local population with a job and develop the economy of the region.

-Excuse me for interrupting you, but I absolutely disagree with you! In my opinion it’s a crime to build the plant. Lake Baikal is a wonder of nature. It’s a giant reservoir of pure, crystal-clear water. In Baikal 150 types of plants and fish live-many of them found nowhere else in the world. We must completely preserve Lake Baikal.

-I support the former speaker, but I would like to add that it will be good to turn Baikal into a park, to build camps, tourist centers, rest homes and sanatoriums.

-Mr. Brinks, have you anything to add?

-Well, if I were the Mayor of Irkutsk, I would pay attention to the development of sustainable tourism in our region. I would try to develop Baikal region as a five-star tourist destination. I would repair the roads, light the streets. I would develop such facilities as good hotels, souvenir shops, coaches with well-trained guides and other things. I would find a way to draw more tourists into the city and would encourage them to spend money there.

-Mrs. Fedosova, do you know what the water quality in Baikal is?

-The water is deliciously tasty and pure as a spring. And this notwithstanding the problems posed by the cellulose industry. Baikal has powerful defensive mechanisms of self-purification.

-Why is the Baikal water so transparent?

-The Baikal water contains small amounts of dissolved and suspended substances, that is why, its transparency exceeds all lacustrine waterbodies in the world and is almost equal to transparency of oceans waters.

-How did the construction of the Irkutsk hydropower station affect the inhabitants of Baikal?

-It affected them considerably. For instance, in the 50-60‘s there was a commercial catch of sculpin, but due to the rise of the Baikal level after the construction of the Irkutsk hydropower station dam, its numbers considerably decreased. The level rise by 1m resulted in changing the conditions of reproduction of this species. Decrease of the sculpin number posed serious problems as to food for omul which caused, in its turn, the reduction in the omul numbers. By the present time the sculpin numbers are increasing, but have not reached the 50’s level yet.

-What is the most popular fish in Baikal?

-I think it’s the famous Baikal omul. It’s a real delicacy. The Baikal grayling is also a superb delicacy. The white fish, the sturgeon and other valuable marketable fish also abound here.

-What is your favourite place at Baikal?

-And now I’d like to talk to our Italian guests. Did you enjoy your staying here?

-We like to travel. We have visited many countries. This year we’ve decided to see Lake Baikal. And we have both good and bad impressions. First, I liked people here, they are friendly and hospitable. The lake is very beautiful, of course, and we took a lot of photographs. But the service was terrible! The main problem was an interpreter. We are Italian and we speak English very bad. Than, the restaurant was very expensive. But the most shoking thing was the litter everywhere! And local residents drink a lot of vodka. Our hotel wasn’t very comfortable, there were no a computer and a shower. There were no many souvenir shops. But, in general, we liked this place. The trip was very interesting. We were lucky with the weather. The nature is so beautiful here, and taiga impressed us a lot.

III. Relaxing pause.

And now let’s stop our discussion for a few minutes and have a rest. I want you to watch the slide-show about Baikal. Admire the beauty of its landscapes and cleanliness of its water and enjoy the wonderful music.

  • I think that we are extremely lucky to live near this wonder of nature. Do you agree?

IV. Discussion.

-Yesterday I received a telegram. Do you want to know from whom? Look at this photo. It is a famous Baikal seal, nerpa. This animal may be called the symbol of Baikal. Listen to the text:

My dear friends! I can’t take part in your conference, so I send you this telegram. Hundreds of people spend their vacations on the shores of Lake Baikal every year. They put up tents wherever they choose, sometimes in specially protected areas, damage the topsoil and vegetation and scare away animals. And they leave a lot of litter. Please, solve this problem! Take care of our glorious and priceless Lake!

Please don’t let factories pollute the water! And don’t kill animals for clothes! We are your younger brothers, you should protect us!”

- What would you answer to this appeal?

V. Students’ projects.

VI. Drawing conclusions and giving marks.

-To sum up the material under discussion I’d like you to draw a conclusion.

P.1. We should protect the Baikal. It is our greatest value, because of its clean water.

P.2. It’s impossible to be a patriot of one’s own country and not to love it’s nature, not to take care of it.

P.3. We cannot do without nature, that’s why careful attitude to its riches is very important.

- Well, our conference is over. I think our discussion was useful for everybody. Thank you for your sincerity and creativity. I am very glad and proud that you have shown excellent knowledge in the topic discussed. Thank you very much. Your marks…
