Travelling to the Moon
“That is one small step for a man
but one giant leap for mankind”
N. Armstrong
Since ancient times the man dreamed of flights into space. One of the objects of his attention was the Moon. (Picture 2) Different writers described the various ways of travelling to the Moon.
The book “ The man on the Moon or the story about travelling there made by Dominic Gonzales” was written by episcope Godwin in 1638. The book appeared in Scotland.
In 1865 J.Wern wrote an exciting novel “ From the Earth to the Moon”.
In 1887 K. Tsiolkovski finished his science-fiction novel “ On the Moon”. It was the story about unusual world of the nearest heavenly body. Tsiolkovski wrote about his hypothesis which were proved by scientific researches soon after. He described the landscape of the Moon very true and made some pictures of it.
We can see only one side of the Moon . That is why nobody knew how its backside looked like. The mankind did not know what it consisted of, its mineral and chemical content.
The era of space flights began and hundreds of satellites and rockets went to the Moon. They searched the surface of the Moon , took pictures of its backside. (Picture 3)
In 1959 the Soviet Union, so our country was called at that time, sent Interplanetary automatic probes “Luna-1”, “Luna-2” “Luna-3” to the Moon. The moving stations – laboratories”Lunokhods” worked on the Moon. (Picture 4) The investigation of the Moon was important for understanding how our planet and solar system were born. It would give scientists detailed views of events that took place in the earliest days of the cosmos.
“ Give me a piece of the Moon and I will tell you a history of our solar system” said Dr. Yuri.
Only a few years before men were walking on the Moon reputable scientists declared that it was impossible. On the 20 th of July 1969 Neil Armstrong stepped out of his space capsule and made his famous statement “ That is one small step for a man but one giant leap for mankind.(Picture 5) Neil Arm strong , the commander of the spaceship “The Apollo 11” was the first, who stepped on the surface of the unfriendly satellite. He remembered : “From the space capsule the sky was black, but on the Moon there was as light as at daytime, the surface of the Moon was red-brown. It was not difficult to go, but the feet slid, a man could jump to 2 meters height without any efforts”
Edwin Oldrin went after him. In the Sea of Silence he left the prints of his boots. (Picture 6)
The dream of mankind came true- the man “mooned” on the Moon. Armstrong and Oldrin put the American flag into the stone body of the Moon, took the soil, and went back. (Picture 7)
After the “Apollo 11” there was “Apollo 12”, “13”, “14”etc. 24 astronauts flew to the Moon, only 12 of them stepped out of the space capsule. They took soil form different parts of the Moon, took pictures of it.140 laboratories began to search the moon soil. It consisted of: volcanic rocks, there was a lot of titanium, pure iron, aluminum, magnesium, no water.(Picture 8) The age of the moon stones was 4.5 billion years . Some gases were found in the Moon cover: hydrogen, helium, neon, argon.
Soon after the first flights to the Moon, people began to dream of building settlements and mining its natural resources. The engineers designed the projects of settlements and cities with the population of about 2 million people.(Picture 9) There were parks, gardens, fields, fountains in the open space.(Picture 10)
However, the progress in this area is slower now. But the Moon is still waiting for us to tell the secrets of the universe.
