When medical staff suspect that Mrs Browning has MRSA, they send blood samples and swabs to the Pathology lab for tests. The test results show that she has an infection from the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. This bacterium has resistance to some antibiotics, it is susceptible to one antibiotic, and there are two antibiotics it cannot resist.
Mrs Browning will be isolated in a separate room and, to avoid any contamination by pathogens, the ward will be thoroughly disinfected.
