Introduction.

What is travel? Why do people travel?

Travelling is a way to discover and experience the world. People travel all the time for different reasons and purposes, and they also travel differents ways.

A famous English writer of the 19th century Robert Louis Stevenson wrote: “For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move”.

I travel a lot; I hate having my life disrupted by routine” said Caskie Stinnett, the American writer.

Don't tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you have traveled” are the words of Mohammed.

All these quotations prove that people have never managed to live fully and happily without traveling and thus experiencing the world.

All this and much more will be discussed in our project.

The purposes and objectives of our project are the following:

  • Talk about travelling and many other things related to this concept

  • Conduct a questionnaire to the students of our school about travelling

  • Take result of our project.

Chapter 1. What is travelling? Means of Travelling.

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays and weekends on travelling. They travel to see other continents, countries, modern cities; they travel to enjoy beautiful places. The term "travel" originates from the [link] .

Chapter 5. Our Research “Travelling and Pupils of Our School”.

We offered a questionnaire to the students of our school about travelling. Our purpose was to find out the opinion of students of different ages about travelling and their experience in it.

Questionnaire/Анкета:

  1. Do you like travelling? Любишь ли ты путешествовать?

  2. What does travelling give you? Что (какие возможности) дают тебе путешествия?

  3. What means of transport for travelling do you use? Каким видом транспорта ты пользуешься для путешествий?

  4. Who do you travel with? С кем тебе нравится путешествовать? (семья, друзья, одноклассники, один)

  5. What is the place that impressed you most? Why? Какое из посещенных мест тебе запомнилось больше всего? Чем?

  6. What is the place you dream to visit? Why? Какое место ты мечтаешь посетить? Почему?

  7. Do you use English in your travelling? In what situations? Пользуешься ли ты английским языком во время путешествий? В каких ситуациях?

These are the results we got:

We interviewed 100 people from classes: 3A, 3G, 4A, 4B, 5A, 7A, 8A, 9A. The students gave the following answers to the questions of the questionnaire.

1) Do you like travelling?

Yes – 95 students,

No - 3,

Not very - 2.

2) What does travelling give you?

The most popular answer was “I Learn something new and interesting about the world” – 46 people;

Leisure – 11;

Getting to know the city and the country, the history, the traditions – 9;

Joy, pleasure – 9;

Knowledge, experience – 6;

Enjoying nature – 3;

Seeing the sights – 2;

Getting to know new people and meeting friends – 2;

Interest in the world – 1;

Rememberings – 1;

This way I learn English – 1;

I am developing” – 1;

It Gives me all” – 1;

Strength and courage – 1;

Freedom – 1;

It gives the feeling on top of the world – 1.

There were still pupils who were hesitating and said:

I do not know” – 3 and “It gives me nothing” – 1.

Among the answers to this question, many students gave several options, we took notice of the first presented in the list.

And there were a few guys (5-6 people), who did not understand the question and answered that travelling is given to them by mom or dad, their work and money.

3) What means of transport for travelling do you use?

The most popular answers included such means of traveling as by car, plane or train.

There are also these:

Boat - 1

Private airplane - 1

Electrical train - 1

Bike -3 people

Truck - 1

Subway - 1

Scooter -1

Ship -3

No transport -1.

We appreciate the sense of humour of some people, it shows our students are always in a good mood and it proves that travelling does give them positive emotions.

4) Who do you travel with?

Both family and friends - about 43 people;

Family – 30;

Friends - about 20;

Classmates – 6;

Alone – 1.

We can clearly see that students love and value both their family and friends. Of course, the older the person is, the more they choose friends for traveling together.

5) What is the place that impressed you most? Why?

The students referred to the countries, such as the Dominican Republic, Poland, Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt, Spain, Slovakia, Germany, Bulgaria, Thailand, Japan, Finland; such cities as: Anapa, Tbilisi, Rome, Kazan, Gelendzhik, Krasnodar, Moscow, Paris, Milan, Nizhny Novgorod; also the Black Sea, the Azov Sea.

But we could also find quite rare responses:

early fishing - "I caught there a carp" (Alexander Shcherbakov 4B),

museum Zhestovo - "there's fun and you can make yourself a tray" (4A Abrahamyan Marina),

"when my family and I went on a picnic, there we had a real fun"(4A Georgadze David), the cave (7A Vitaly Nosov),

a paintball club in Germany (5A Leonov Daniel),

Vietnam – an unusual butterfly (4B Nalysheva Aina),

a camp - "it was interesting" (3G Golikova Xenia,)

Red Square - "it is very beautiful" (3A Lutsenko Sofia),

Kolomna (7A Denis Lobanov),

Kiev - delicious food (9A Kazakevich Leonid),

Tula - museums (9A Moskalenko Andrew).

6) What is the place you dream to visit? Why?

The answers varied: Miami, London, rainforests, Greece, islands, Japan, Cote d'Azur, Egypt, India, America, Africa, Australia, Goa, a chocolate factory, the jungles, Kuskovo.

Answers:

England, London - 12

Paris, France - 12

Russia -1

Chechnya – 1

"no place" - 4 people

"I do not know" – 5.

7) Do you use English in your travelling? In what situations?

Yes - 40 (when ordering a meal in a cafe, a shop, when talking to an English-speaking person, in the camp);

Sometimes - 7 people (in the store or to ask for directions, if you need to buy a soda or ice cream)

No – 53.

"When I went to Grushinskiy festival, I was talking nearly English with an

Englishman" - wrote a student of class 4B Nesterenko Natalia.

Thus, the results we got are not really surprising. Travelling is something everybody likes, or at least most of us (95%). We are sure those who do not will reveal its taste in the future. The students still prefer to travel with their families or friends by traditional means of transport. They still want to visit England and France, as well as other popular today destinations. And 40% use the English language in their traveling, which proves the need for the language.

Conclusion.

So, as you see, travelling is very interesting to do. Every man should go where they want. We are told only about a small part of the interesting places in the world. In fact, there is much more. And they are all worth seeing. Also, on the subject of travel there have been shot a lot of films and written many books.

People like travelling. Even those, who have never visited, for example, another country, still want to travel.

We would like to finish with the words of several famous people who loved and appreciated travelling. But we would also wish to add: We hope you like our project, and we hope you will always be travelling.

Quotations about travelling:

  • "A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step." - Lao Tzu.

  • "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." - Mark Twain.

  • Without travel "I would have wound up a little ignorant white Southern female, which was not my idea of a good life." - Lauren Hutton.

  • "Traveling is almost like talking with men of other centuries." - René Descartes.

  • "One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things." - Henry Miller.

  • "A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it." - John Steinbeck.

  • "If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home." - James Michener.

  • "The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page." - St.Augustine.
