Children make a snowman and put their stockings over the fireplace, waiting for presents from Santa. People bake cakes and ginger breads.

IV Activate (Slide #4)

Thank you for your stories. On your desks you see green and blue sheets of paper with rebuses. Your task is to unscramble words.

1. Merry Christmas 2. Presents 3. Santa Claus

V Activate

You know that Santa Claus is a symbol of Christmas. But what other symbols does it have? Let’s have a look!

Santa Claus (Ismailova Asel) (Slide #5)

Santa Claus got his name from a man known as St. Nicolas, who lived in the fourth century. He gave his wealth to the poor and often to children. After he died, the Dutch brought this legend to colonial America. Soon the Dutch name Sinter Klaus became Santa Claus.

Stockings (Pokazanov Alexei) (Slide #6)

On the eve of Christmas children hang their stockings, so that Santa Claus could put presents into them: oranges, sweets, nuts and if the child didn't behave properly Santa Claus can put there a piece of coal as punishment.

Carol singing (Рождественское песнопение) (Grushin Artyom) (Slide #7)

Carol singing is an essential part of Christmas. Usually children come around in the evening to the front doors and start singing carols and people who live in these houses give children candies, nuts, pies and so on, to thank them for carol singing.

Holly (Падуб (остролист) (Tsys Arina) (Slide #8)

In many western cultures, holly is a traditional Christmas decoration, used especially in wreaths. The green leaves represent eternal life, and the red berries represent the blood of Christ. It is said that holly was used to make the crown of thorns. At that time the berries were yellow. In honor to the blood shed by Christ the berries turned red.

Poinsettia (Пуэнсэтия) (Savel’eva Ekaterina) (Slide #9)

The plant's association with Christmas began in 16th century Mexico, where legend tells of a young girl who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus' birthday. The tale goes that the child was inspired by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson "blossoms" sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias. From the 17th century, Franciscan friars in Mexico included the plants in their Christmas celebrations.

Ivy (Плющ) (Klyopka Victoria) (Slide #10)

Christmas Ivy is a plant of winters that blossoms with its bulky green leaves.

Ivy has to cling to something to support itself as it grows. This reminds us that we need to cling to God for support in our lives.

According to lots of Christian convictions, the Ivy of Christmas is the embodiment of love, care and trust.

Mistletoe (Омела) (Repetskaya Tatiana) (Slide #11)

Mistletoe is a plant that grows on willow and apple trees. The practice of hanging it in the house goes back to the times of the ancient Druids. It is supposed to possess mystical powers which bring good luck to the household and ward off evil spirits. It was also used as a sign of love and friendship.

According to a custom of Christmas cheer, any two people who meet under a hanging of mistletoe are obliged to kiss. The custom of kissing under Mistletoe comes from England!

Now you know more about symbols of Christmas and their meanings.

VI Activate (Slide #12)
