Звучит гимн Беларуси.

Good afternoon, pupils! Nice to see you! Though I am a grown- up but I still love magic and wonders. What about you?

Pupils:……………………

Let’s start our trip to a country of wonders.

Look around, remember the unusual lesson start and guess, what county we are going to travel to.

Pupils:……………………

Right. We are going to travel around Belarus. And today we will speak about:

  • National wonders

  • Nature wonders

  • Myth wonders

We will decide who is the most active, attentive and smart at the end of the lesson with the help of these point cards which you will get during the lesson for your answers.

Look at the blackboard. You can see the name of our country.

Unique

S

The word “ unique” comes to my mind when I see the letter “u” because Belarus has unique nature, unique warm-hearted people, places.

Pupils:……………………

Every country has its own symbols. And our country is not an exception. What national symbols do you know?

Pupils:……………………

Предтекстовый этап

We will work in two teams. Come up and take a card. Now we have two teams – a green one and a red one.

Текстовый этап

Every team has the same text about our national wonders. But the missing information is different for each team. To fill in the information gaps make up questions and ask the pupils from another team. (Приложение 1)

Послетекстовый этап

So what is the top popular national symbol in your opinion. Why?

Pupils:……………………

Let’s go back to our Belarus associations and see what other wonders you have mentioned: bison, rivers, lakes, storks. All these wonders can be called Nature Wonders.

We will work in pairs.

Each pair has got a nature wonder: a bison, a stork and a cornflower. I’ll give you cards with different facts. But only three of them are about your symbol. Try to choose the necessary facts to make up a speech for the competition “The Best Nature Symbol”. (Приложение 2)

Предтекстовый этап

Every country tries to attract foreign tourists. For instance, Scotland is famous for its Loch Ness Monster, Great Britain is proud of King Arthur. Do you know any legends about Belarus?

Pupils:………………

Do you know why Lake Narach is called so?

Pupils:………………

Текстовый этап

Then, let’s listen to the legend about this place.

Oh, something wrong has happened to the record. But I am sure that each of you is creative and is able to make up the ending of the story and don’t forget about the title of the legend.

Work in two groups.

Pupils:………………

Do you want to know the real ending of the legend? Let’s see if it works. Fine! Let’s listen and check who was closer to the truth. (Приложение 3)

Послетекстовый этап

Tell me what was interesting for you? What surprised you most of all? Do you believe in it?

Now, you can see that Belarus is really a country of wonders.

Let’s remember what we have learnt during our lesson. You can see different pictures around the classroom. Take only those images we have discussed today and attach them on the map under the suitable categories.

Your homework will be to create a brochure for foreign tourists. You have a choice. Some of you may prepare information about Lake Naroch. The others – about the 3 wonders we have discussed at the lesson.

Thank you very much for your great work!

Let’s see the results of your work. Count your points.

Your marks for the lesson. I give you a nine…….

Stand up, please. The lesson is over. Good-bye!

National wonders of Belarus

Belarus has its national symbols.

One of them is our flag which was introduced on the 7th of June in 1995. There is a green stripe on our flag. The green stripe is a symbol of our green forests. The red stripe reminds people of the Great Patriotic War.

Another symbol is the national anthem which was adopted in 2002. The lyrics were written by M. Klimkovich and V. Karizna. The composer was N. Sokolovsky.

Belarus is also famous for its national costume. The blouses, the shirts in the Belarusian national costume are white with beautiful red ornaments – crosses and stripes. The white colour in the costume is the symbol of peace. People wear national costumes on traditional holidays like Kupalle Night, Kolyady and other festivals.

The Legend of Lake Narach

Many years ago there lived a girl called Nara. She could sing very well and play the violin.

She loved a young man and wanted to marry him. One day she was sitting near a large beautiful lake when a rich man saw her. He liked Nara so much that he wanted to marry her. As Nara had a groom she didn’t want to marry the rich man. But the rich man was very stubborn, and his servants killed Nara’s groom and took Nara to the rich man’s palace.

The girl was so unhappy that when everybody was sleeping, she set fire to the palace, and ran away.

When the rich man learnt about it, he sent his servants after Nara. As she couldn’t run away from them, Nara jumped into the lake and died.

From that time the lake was named Lake Narach.
