Название: «A great tour around the world»

Цель урока: формирование лексических навыков говорения и чтения по теме «Great Britain»

Сопутствующая задача: совершенствование речевых умений и навыков

Образовательная задача: формирование социокультурной и страноведческой компетенций, знакомство учащихся с интересными особенностями различных языков мира

Воспитательная задача: воспитание интереса к английскому языку и культуре стран изучаемого языка, формирование потребности к осознанию образа жизни, поведения людей другой культуры и свое родной культуры, формирование терпеливого отношения к особенностям поведения людей другой культуры, формирование умений работать в команде.

Речевой материал:

Материал для повторения: mother tongue, inhabitants, Spanish, French, Greek, Italian, German, English, international.

Новый речевой материал: Haiti, Eire, formalize.

Оснащение: компьютер, интерактивная доска, мультимедийный проектор, диски с записями

Наглядность:

А) Речевая: таблички с названиями различных иностранных языков

Б) Иллюстративная: политическая карта мира, раздаточный материал для выполнения заданий конкурса





Ход мероприятия.


I. Приветствие.

Организацион-ный момент.


-Good morning, boys and girls. Sit down, please.

I am glad to see you. How are you today?


II. Сообщение темы урока.

-Today we are going to a great tour around our world. Our aim today is to learn some interesting information about foreign languages and funny facts about different countries.


III. Речевая разминка.

-Please, look at the screen. You see a quotation: He who does not know foreign languages does not know anything about his own. (Johann Goethe).

-Who can translate it? Can you explain the meaning of this quotation?

(Дети высказывают свое мысли о том, как они понимают данное высказывание «Тот, кто не знает иностранных языков, не знает ничего о своем собственном»).

-Ok, you are right. You see that every person must know not only his tongue language, but must know at least several foreign languages.


IV. Основной этап.

-Now, I want you to divide into 2 teams.

What is the name of first / second team? Who is the captain of first / second team? (названия команд записываются на доске).

-Well, our teams are ready. I see that you are full of energy and enthusiasm to begin our competition. For every correct answer our independent jury will give you a point. The more points you get the more chances you have to win. Is it clear?


1 конкурс.

TRUE OR FALSE”

-Let’s begin then. Our first task is called TRUE/FALSE. Each team gets 2 cards: the 1st is for “TRUE” and the 2nd is for “FALSE”. We are going to read a statement to you. If you believe that this statement is true, you raise the card “TRUE”, but if you suppose that it can’t be true, you raise the card “FALSE”. After you have heard the statement you’ll get 10 seconds to discuss it in your groups and get ready with the answer. Is everything clear? Good. Let’s begin then.

The statements:

1. There are about 2 000 languages in the world. (False = 6000-7000 depending on the criteria.)

2. 46% of people in the European Union can speak at least 2! foreign languages other than their mother tongue (false = 26%)

3. People are fined in Singapore for chewing-gums. You are not allowed to bring them into the country.(True)

4. 17% of retired people in Europe can speak at least 1 language other than their mother tongue.(True)

5. The inhabitants of Papua New Guinea, a very small country situated near Australia, speak about 10 languages.(False=they speak about 700 languages)

6. Ernest Vincent Wright, a popular American writer, has a book which is called “Gadsby”. The book has more than 50000 words, but there is not a single letter E in it, though it is the most frequent letter in the English alphabet.(True)

7. The language most spoken as a mother tongue in the European Union is FRENCH. (False=German)

8. The Hawaiian alphabet has only 12 letters.(True)

9. 70 % of people in the European Union speak NO ENGLISH (False=43%)

10. Russia has about 200 languages spoken on its territory (True)

LANGUAGES”

-You’ve coped with the 1st task well enough, but let’s see the way you can do with the second. It is called “LANGUAGES”. You can see the names of different languages on the blackboard. Let’s read and translate them.

(On the board: SPANISH, FRENCH, GREEK, ITALIAN,GERMAN, ENGLISH, HINDI, DUTCH, TURKISH, JAPANESE, POLISH, HUNGARIAN)

- So, your task is the following: you get a card with a table where you should find and cross out the names of different foreign languages, some of them you can see on the board now, but some of them you’ll have to remember. For every correct name of language you’ll get a point. Try to get 10 out of 10. You have 3 minutes to do the task. Begin, please.

ON THE MAP”

-While your papers are being checked, we continue our work, and your 3d task is called “ON THE MAP”. Let’s see the way you can work with the map.

-Captains, please, come out. I have a coin. I’ll toss it. Who will be “head” and who will be “tails”? So, 1 teamhead, 2 teamtails.

- So, the task of the first team is to remember at least 3 English-speaking countries and show them on the map. And the task of the second team is to do the same with the French-speaking countries. You’ve got 5 minutes to discuss the tasks in your groups. For every correct country you’ll get a point. Take your time, please.

- Good. So, take a look at the map. French is spoken in such countries as France, Canada, Madagascar, Cameroon, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Monaco, Algeria, Haiti and some other countries. (все страны показываются на карте).

-They speak English in the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, Eire, Jamaica, New Zealand and in many African countries that used to be British colonies. (все страны показываются на карте).

- The jury, the floor is yours now. Announce the results of the contest “ON THE MAP”.

And now the results of the task “LANGUAGES”, please.

- Dear contestants, you’ve managed to do 3 tasks and the team … is leading for the present moment. But you’re only in the middle of the contest and everything can change.

THE QUIZ”

-Your next task is “THE QUIZ”. You’ll have 4 contests in it. The first one is “Colours”. Take a look at the board. Here you can see 4 colours.

- We are going to work with the flags of different countries. I give you the name of a country, you show the numbers of the colours that we can see in the flag of this country. For example, if I say “RUSSIA”, you show numbers 1,3,4. Then I show you the flag of the country for you to check. (ведущий показывает флаг России как образец). You have 7 seconds to discuss your ideas. Every correct answer gives you 1 point. Let’s begin.

  • In which country has lack of punctuality been formalized so that it is almost impolite to be on time? (key – 1 Italy)

  • In which country is there a tradition of making business deals in the sauna? (key – 4 Russia)

- And the last part of our quiz is called “Sights”. Look at the board. Here you can see 6 places of interest.

-Your task is the following. We are going to give you the name of a country, you are to show the number of the place of interest that is situated in this very country. You have 1 minute to discuss your ideas in your groups. Is it clear? Let’s begin then:

  • Russia (key – 1 Red Square)

  • France (key – 2 Eiffel Tower)

  • The USA (key – 4 Statue of Liberty)

  • Italy (key- 5 Colosseum)

-You are very bright pupils! The jury, please, announce the results of the “QUIZ”: “Colours”? “Countries”? “Sights”?

TONGUE-TWISTER”

-The following task is for you to have a little rest. I need 1 pupil from each team. Look at the board. Here you can see 2 tongue-twisters: the 1st is for Bubble Gum and the 2nd is for Elite. You should read your tongue-twister as quickly as you can 3 times. If you do it correctly, you get 1 point.

  1. Give dad a cup of proper coffee in a copper coffee cup.

  2. She brews a proper cup of coffee in a copper coffee pot.

-The jury, do the both teams get 1 point?

INTERNATI-

ONAL WORDS”

- Well, pupils, the atmosphere is getting hot in our competition. We’re very close to the end.

Our next contest is called “INTERNATIONAL WORDS”. You know that all languages are different but still there are words which exist in all languages, they have approximately the same pronunciation and meaning. Such words are called international words.

- You get a card in which you can see a list of words grouped in 5 lines. There is an international word in each line. Try to find it. You have 3 minutes to do the task. When your time is up, the captains of the teams will come out to write these words down on the board. Begin working!

- And this diploma is for the team that has won the second prize – the team of …! Here you are. Don’t be upset and remember that participation is more important than victory.

- There is a Czech proverb “Learn language and gain a new soul”. Let this be one of your aims in life. Thank you for taking part in the competition and for your excellent knowledge of foreign countries.
