T: GENERAL INFORMATION

London lies on the river Thames. The population of the city is about 9 million people. It is an ancient city, for it is more than 2000 years old. London consists of three main parts: the City, The West End and the East End. The City is the most important commercial and financial center of the country; there are banks and offices of companies from all over the world there. The West End is a district where most of theaters, bars, restaurants and hotels are situated. The popular place is Piccadilly Circus. It is a square in the central part of London, where we can see people of many nationalities. Piccadilly Circus is the meeting point of six streets. London’s famous restaurants and best-known theatres and cinemas are on Piccadilly Circus. Covent Garden is a tourist shopping center with cafes and restaurants. In the East End there are most of the factories and docks.

G1: And now we start our tour from Tower Bridge. The road over the bridge is built on two central sections; they open two or three times a week to let ships. On the right bank of river you can see the Tower of London. It is nine hundred years old.

G2: Now we are coming to London Bridge. It is two thousand years old. There were houses and shops on it and people paid money when they crossed the bridge. In 1960 the people of London wanted to build a large new bridge at this place. A very rich American bought the old London Bridge. The American brought the parts of the bridge on a ship to Arizona in the USA.

C: Excuse me. I’ve got a question. Why did that rich American buy the old London Bridge?

G2: He wanted to show it to people for money.

C: Thanks a lot.

G3: And now we can visit St. Paul’s Cathedral. It was created by England’s greatest architect Sir Christopher Wren. The Cathedral was begun in 1675 and was finished only in 1710.

G1: And now we are making our tour up the Thames to the House of Parliament. It is the seat of British government. There is the Clock Tower and the clock in the House of Parliament. The Clock Tower is 318 feet high. The man in charge of building was Sir Benjamin Hall. The man was very tall and the workers and his friends called him Big Ben. So they called the bell Big Ben too.

G2: Dear guests! Our tour is over. I hope you liked it. And now we can start our bus tour.

G3: Now we are coming to Trafalgar Square. It commemorates Nelson’s victory at the battle of Trafalgar. There is a Nelson’s column in the center of square. It is over 170 feet high. The statue shows Nelson with one hand and one eye. He lost them in the battle. The four bronze lions at the base were added in 1867.

C: Excuse me, what do the lions symbolize?

G3: They symbolize four Nelson’s victories.

C: Thanks a lot.

G2: There are a lot of parks and gardens in London. In Regent’s park there is London Zoo.

Today there are more than 8000 animals in the Zoo.

C: Which animals are the biggest in the Zoo?

G2: The biggest animals are giraffes, elephants and rhinos.

Т: What birds live in the Zoo?

G2: There are parrots, pelicans, ducks, eagles and many others.

G3: We are coming now to Westminster Abbey. It is a royal church. Here you can see the tombs of many British kings and queens and other famous people. The Abbey was founded in the 11th century.

G1: Now we are at Buckingham Palace. It is the London home of the queen. When the flag is flying on the top she is at home. The ceremony of the Changing of the Guard is a great tourist attraction. It takes place daily at half past twelve in the afternoon and lasts half an hour.

C: How many rooms are there in the Palace?

G1: There are 600 rooms.

C: Does the Queen’s family live at the Palace?

G1: They stay at the Palace on weekdays.

C: Thank you.
