Задания по чтению

Задание 1

Прочитайте тексты и установите соответствие между текстами А–G и заголовками 1–8. Запишите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую цифру только один раз. В задании есть один лишний заголовок.

1. The history of the name

2. Pumpkin: brief facts

3. Cooking with pumpkin

4. The autumn celebrity fruit

5. Pumpkin recipes

6. Pumpkin’s magical popularity

7. Growing a pumpkin

8. Pumpkin in the learning process

A. The pumpkin is a large round fruit with a thick orange skin and large seeds. Pumpkins are 90% water but they contain potassium and vitamin A. Six of seven continents can grow pumpkins. Pumpkins symbolize the colours and the spirit of the autumn. Lots of movies were made with pumpkin and Halloween

themes.

B. It's believed that pumpkins come from North America. Native American Indians ate pumpkins for centuries before the Europeans discovered the fruit. In European languages the word ''pumpkin'' originated from the Greek word for

"large melon" which is "pepon." "Pepon" was changed by the French into "pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "pumpion."

C. In the United States, pumpkins go hand in hand with the autumn holidays of Thanksgiving and Halloween. On almost every Thanksgiving table there is the customary Pumpkin Pie. Pumpkins are carved into decorated lanterns for Halloween. The pumpkin is also one of the important symbols of the harvest  festivals and has been an American favourite for over 400 years now.

D. In the USA, the pumpkin is a very popular Thanksgiving dish. We don't know for sure whether the pumpkin was at the very first Thanksgiving dinner but it was used in all traditional meals long before the arrival of the Europeans. Most parts of the pumpkin are suitable for eating, including the shell, the seeds, the leaves, and even the flowers. When ripe, the pumpkin can be boiled, baked,  steamed or roasted.

E. The pumpkin is a warm-season fruit. If you want to have a nice pumpkin for Halloween, plant the seeds from late May in northern regions to early July in southern regions. Pumpkins can be harvested whenever they are a deep, solid colour (orange for most varieties) and the coat is hard. Cut off pumpkins  carefully and leave 3 to 4 inches of stem attached.

F. The pumpkin is a real October icon – the fruit of the month. It's also popular as  an available, inexpensive material for some wonderful classroom activities! Its size, colour, smell and taste make it perfect for observation and exploration.  Working in groups students can search, suggest, predict and estimate the  number of seeds in a set of pumpkins.

G. For centuries the pumpkin has been popular with wizards, witches and fairies. Maybe that’s why it is celebrated in so many festivals, folklore and fiction. People make jack-o'-lanterns at Halloween in the USA. In European and

American fairy-tales witches often turn people into pumpkins. Even in modern  the Harry Potter novels pumpkin juice is the favourite drink of the students of Hogwart’s school.

Drew Blythe Barrymore was born on February 22, 1975, in California, to John Drew Barrymore and Ildiko Jaid. Her father and mother had parted two months before she was born, and Jaid had to raise baby Drew alone.

The actress's career began with a TV advertisement made before she had completed her first year, and, aged 4, she appeared on the screen. Her godfather, Steven Spielberg, made her a star in one of his best movies "ET" and three years later Stephen King created a role in his film especially for her. Then it all went terribly wrong.

Jaid started taking Drew to Hollywood parties and at the age of 9 the young girl already had alcohol and drug-related problems. Her mother put her into a special hospital, and by 14 Drew overcame all her problems at last.

She became more optimistic and wrote her auto biography, "Little Girl Lost". Drew also returned to acting. She took part in some TV films. But she wasn't very successful there. After a series of forgettable TV films she played a leading part in 1996's hit "Scream". "Success is the best revenge in the world," she said. "And I'm back." Eager to have more creative plans Drew and her business partner Nancy Juvonen founded a production company called "Flower Films" in 1994. They were a success with the hit "Charlie's Angels". F. More peaceful world

11. As we know, approximately fifty years ago television was introduced, making the world

smaller by bringing images from all four corners of the world into our homes. Over the

last decade or so, a breakthrough in technology has come into our lives which is making

the world even smaller: the Internet. With a PC and a telephone line, we are now

connected to the whole world in a matter of seconds.

12. It is now possible to speak to relatives and friends anywhere in the world cheaply and

quickly. It is even possible, with something called a webcam, to see and hear them at the

same time. It was not that long ago that the only way to communicate with family

members who were far away was by letter, which could take days or sometimes weeks to

reach its destination.

13. The Internet also allows us to access a world of facts, figures and knowledge. If we have

a question on any subject at all from history to mathematics or philosophy to geography,

it can be discovered on the Net. We can find out the latest news or what the weather is

going to be like. Many subjects that required the reading of books and were once only

available to a few people are now available to everybody.

14. The Internet not only means that we can communicate with loved ones but also with

complete strangers. By using “chat” services, it is possible to meet and exchange ideas

with people from all over the world. It is sometimes unbelievable to think that the person

we are writing to may be thousands of miles away, living in a completely different culture

with a way of life that is nothing like our own. Of course, to be able to do this, we must

speak the same language and that’s why most communication on the Internet takes place

in English.

15. Other services are also available through the Internet. One of these which provides hours

of pleasure for many people is the ability to download songs and music from other

people. This has also helped to bring down cultural barriers as we are able to hear all the

different kinds of music that exist all over the world. This helps us to understand other

cultures better and makes us familiar with what used to be regarded as something

completely foreign and strange to us.
