Theme: International organizations

Aims:

1. To give the pupils information about international organizations, compare them.

2. To teach to pupils some new words, a new text to read and discuss, review a

grammar rule and do some exercises by using them to remain in their mind.

3. Try to develop pupils speaking skills in English.

Visual aids: Text-books, pictures, charts

Procedure of the lesson:


  1. Organization moment:

- Good morning, pupils.

- Good morning, teacher.

- Who is on duty today?

- Who is absent today?

- What is the day and date today?

- What was your homework?


II. Phonetic drill: let’s review some of the new vocabularies and their meanings you learned at the former lesson to increase your vocabulary.

There are a lot of international organizations which cooperate with our country Kazakhstan in different fields. They are: World Bank, Tacis, Save the Children and The British Council. The emblems of some of these organizations were given below. In today’s lesson we’re going to read a text about one of these important international organizations “The British Council” and discuss it.

The British Council”

The British council is an independent organization which was founded in 1940 to promote educational, cultural and technical cooperation between Britain and other countries. The aim of the organization is to have long-term and worldwide partnerships and to improve international understanding. At present the British Council is working in 120 countries in the fields of English language teaching, education and training, academic and scientific exchanges, and social and economic development. In addition the British Council operates libraries and information centres around the world and also promotes British literature and the arts. The British Council’s UK headquarters are in London and Manchester from where it is supervised by a Board and managed by a Director General. It receives about one third of its funding from the British government and earns the rest from the various services it offers to clients and from managing projects for other agencies, such as the World Bank.

In the field of education and training, the British Council organizes international conferences for academics and administers examinations such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). This test, which assesses the knowledge of English language of people who want to study in an English speaking country, is accepted by universities in Britain, Australia and North America. Around 23,000 people take the IELTS test each year.
