Here at last is a true lover. Night after night I have sung of him, though I knew him not. Night after night I have told his story to the stars and now I see him. His hair is dark as the hyacinth- blossom. And his lips are red as the rose of his desire. But passion made his face like pale ivory.
Student: The Prince gives a ball tomorrow night and my love will be of the company. If I bring her a red rose she will dance with me till dawn. If I bring her a red rose I shall hold her in my arms and she will lean her head upon my shoulders. But there’s no red rose in my garden! So.. I shall sit lonely and my heart will break.
Nightingale: Here indeed is a true lover what I sing of, he suffers , what is joy to me , to him is pain, love is a wonderful thing. It’s more precious than emeralds and dearer that fine opals.
Student: The musicians will sit in their gallery and play upon their instruments, and my love will dance to the sound of the harp and the violin. But with me she will not dance. I have no roses to give her!
Butterfly 1, 2, 3: Why is he weeping? Why indeed? Why?
Nightingale: he’s weeping for a red rose.
Butterflies: For a red rose? For a red rose? How very ridiculous!
Nightingale: One red rose! Is all I want. Is there no way to get it? Give me a red rose. And I will sing you the sweetest song.
White rose: My roses are white. As white as a foam of the sea and whiter as the snow on the mountain. But go to my brother who grows round the sun-dial and perhaps he will give you what you want.
Yellow rose; My roses are yellow as the hair of the mermaiden who sits upon an amber thrown and yellower than the daffodil that blossoms in the meadow. But go to my brother who grows beneath the Student’s window and he will perhaps give you what you want.
Red rose: my roses are red as red as the feet of the dove. But winter has chilled my veins and the storm has broken my branches and I shall have no roses this summer…But There’s a way to get it .. but it’s so terrible that I dare not tell it to you.
Nightingale: Tell it to me I’m not afraid.
Red rose: If you want a red rose you should build it out of music by moonlight and stain it with your own heart’s blood. You must sing me with your breast against the thorn. All night long you must sing it to me and the thorn must pierce your heart and your life blood flow into my veins and become mine.
Nightingale: Death is a great price to pay for a red rose! But Love is better than Life and what is a heart of a bird compared to a heart of a man?
Be happy! Be happy!! You will have your red rose!
Look! Look! The rose is finished now!
What a wonderful luck! Here’s a red rose! It’s so beautiful!
You said you would dance with me if I brought you a red rose. Here’s the reddest rose in the world. You will wear it and we will dance together. It will tell you how I love you!
I’m afraid it will not go with my dress. And besides… the Chamberlain’s nephew has sent me some jewels and jewels cost much more than a rose. And who are you? Only a student.
Well…You are so ungrateful! What a silly thing love is!
